INTRODUCTION Antiseptics and disinfectants are used at length in hospitals and other health care settings for a variety of topical and hard-surface applications. In specific, they play a fundamental role in infection control practices and help in the avoidance of nosocomial infections (1), (2). Mounting concerns over potential microbial contamination and infection risks in food and general consumer markets have led to increased use of antiseptics and disinfectants by the general public. A wide range of active chemical agents (or biocides) is found in these products, many of which have been used for hundreds of years for antisepsis, disinfection and preservation (3).
